Norm DeVol’s Story
Sharing his love and joy for singing for more than 50 years, Norm DeVol has taught hundreds of students over those years in both California and Oregon. Norm graduated from San José State University with a degree in vocal performance and minor in piano. Following his graduation, Norm opened shop as a voice teacher sharing his knowledge and experience.
In addition to his private voice studio, he continued honing his own vocal talents as a tenor soloist, performing with award-winning choirs, regional opera companies and symphonies, and as a professional member of the San Francisco Opera Chorus. Norm was also an adjunct professor on the music staff at Sierra Community College in the Sacramento area of Northern California and Assistant Conductor of the prestigious Masterworks Chorale.
From the California Bay Area. Norm DeVol relocated to Salem, Oregon, in 2016 and opened his studio there immediately. Since then, he has shared his fun and nurturing teaching style with dozens of students - from young to old and just starting their singing journeys to those with professional careers!
My teaching philosophy…
My goals in teaching are to make singing, fun… challenging… and fulfilling!
The fun in learning to sing comes from creating a relaxed and supportive learning environment using vocal exercises and age and experience appropriate songs that are enjoyable to learn. I also use positive feedback to help encourage the student and achieve the best results.
The challenge in learning to sing is when a student is willing to try different techniques of vocal production and to commit to practice those techniques until they are used consistently and become second nature.
And finally the fulfilling part of learning to sing comes as a student realizes they have improved their vocal production and learned to present a song with confidence—using techniques that are comfortable and automatic and with thoughtful interpretation.
